Due to technological advancements, we now use the pay service supported by each smartphone manufacturer (Samsung Pay, LG Pay, Apple Pay, etc.) to make payments. Additionally, each bank, for example, KB Kookmin Bank, has created the “KB Pay” app to support online payments.
That’s how often we carry our wallets around, but there are many times when we feel embarrassed because we don’t have our most important ID (resident registration card, driver’s license). Today, we would like to introduce you to mobile ID to solve these moments.
In accordance with Article 25 of the Resident Registration Act, mobile ID (resident registration card) has the same effect as the existing physical resident registration card, and can be used on only one mobile phone in the name of the individual so that it can be used without the risk of theft, rental, or forgery. A mobile resident registration card is issued to a citizen who is 17 years of age or older and has a normal physical resident registration card and is using a mobile phone in his/her name.
A total of three steps must be taken to issue a mobile resident registration card, and a mobile phone in his/her name must be present.
A mobile driver’s license has the same effect as a physical driver’s license, just like the above resident registration card. It is used for identification purposes like a resident registration card, and can be used in all places (public institutions, banks, rental car companies, airports, hospitals, convenience stores, telecommunication companies, elections, etc. where current driver’s licenses are used) just like a physical one.
Anyone who has obtained a driver’s license can apply for it, and additionally, foreigners residing in Korea with an alien registration card can apply for it.
Regarding the issuance of a mobile driver’s license (IC driver’s license), please visit a nearby driver’s license examination center or police station’s civil affairs office, and you can apply for it after verifying your identity. If there is a mobile ID icon at the bottom of the photo of your actual driver’s license, it is an IC driver’s license. If not, you will need to get a new one issued to be issued a mobile driver’s license.
You can get a mobile driver’s license by touching the back of your smartphone with the IC driver’s license you received and authenticating yourself. The method of getting it issued on-site at a driver’s license examination center is to take a picture of the information pattern (QR) installed at the examination center window using the mobile ID app and get it issued. The issuance fee is 1,000 won.
To get an IC driver’s license, you must replace your current driver’s license with an IC driver’s license with an IC chip, and the replacement fee is “13,000 won.” If lost, you can reissue it as an IC license without having to visit the institution again. Just like the resident registration card, the mobile driver’s license cannot be used on more than two mobile terminals, and when replacing a smartphone / changing a physical driver’s license (reissue, etc.) / expiring the mobile driver’s license’s validity period (3 years), you must apply for issuance using an IC driver’s license or a one-time issuance QR code on-site (at a driver’s license examination center or police station).
