6. Tips for reducing electricity bills in daily life
1. KEPCO residential energy cashback
All electrical appliances required for daily life are charged an electricity fee to each household based on the amount of electricity used. However, in this era of high inflation, many people are worried as electricity bills continue to rise, increasing the cost of living.
With KEPCO Energy Cashback, if electricity users living at home reduce their electricity usage by a certain level compared to the past, they can receive cashback equivalent to the savings. Energy cashback lowers your electricity bills and helps you develop habits to save electricity, which has a positive effect on global warming.
Apartment complex energy cashback was implemented until 2023, but from 2024, apartment complex energy cashback will end and will not be implemented. Please note that starting from 2024, only residential energy cash will be provided.
2.Cashback payment criteria
With electricity rates increasing as of January 1, 2024, household electricity bills have increased by an average of 22%. You can see that this is the largest increase in electricity rates since 2008.
Before looking into the energy cashback payment standards, let’s first look at the standards by which electricity bills are calculated. Electricity fees are charged based on the base rate and the amount of electricity. The electricity fee per 1kw for home use is as follows.
Usage range Basic rate (KRW/unit) Electricity rate (KRW/kWh)
Below 300kWh 910 120.0
301~450kWh 1,600 214.6
Over 450 kWh 7,300 307.3
For households using 300kWh or less, the electricity bill per 1kw is 120.0 won, and for homes using 301 to 450kWh, the electricity bill per 1kw is 214.6 won. Also, for households using more than 450 kWh, the electricity bill per 1 kWh is 307.3 won.
To put it simply, for a household using 300 kWh, if you add the base rate of 910 won and the electricity rate of 36,000 won (300 kWh x 120.0 won), the electricity bill used for one month is 37,910 won.
Payment criteria
KEPCO’s electricity bill cashback payment standard will be applied from January 2024, and if the consumption is reduced by more than 3% compared to the average usage in the same period over the previous two years, 30 to 100 won per 1 kWh will be paid differentially depending on the savings rate range. At this time, the savings rate is paid out at a limit of 30%.
savings rate
Section 3% or more
~Less than 5% More than 5%
~Less than 10% More than 10%
~Less than 20% More than 20%
~30% or less
Unit price 30 won/kWh 60 won/kWh 80 won/kWh 100 won/kWh
The amount of savings is calculated as ‘(current usage – past average usage) = amount of savings’.
This payment example is based on a customer whose average usage for the previous two years was 332 kWh. If the average usage is 332 kWh and a reduction of 33% (saving amount of 110 kWh) is achieved, cashback will be paid based on the 30% reduction limit (saving amount of 100 kWh).
Savings Rate Savings (kWh) Cashback
4% 14 420 won (14kWh x 30 won/kWh)
7% 24 1,440 won (24kWh x 60 won/kWh)
11% 37 KRW 2,960 (37 kWh x KRW 80/kWh)
22% 74 7,400 won (74kWh x 100 won/kWh)
33% 110(100*) KRW 10,000 (100kWh x KRW 100/kWh)
3. Cashback payment method and application period
Payment method
Energy cashback was previously paid in cash, but the payment method has changed from the second half of 2023. For the residential energy cashback payment method, the energy cashback amount calculated every month by Korea Electric Power Corporation is deducted and reflected in the next month’s electricity bill.
One thing to keep in mind at this time is that if the applicant’s address changes due to moving, etc., you must reapply for residential energy cashback based on the changed resident registration address. If you reapply due to moving, etc., cashback calculated at your previous address will be excluded from payment.
When to apply
Cashback for residential energy cashback is calculated starting from the month including the application date. In this case, the application date refers to the date of applying for energy cashback, not the first to last day of the calendar.
KEPCO cashback calculation is completed about a week after the next month’s meter reading date. To put it simply, January 17th is the meter reading date, and if you succeed in reducing electricity consumption in February, your electricity usage for February will be from January 17th to February 16th. At this time, the calculation date for residential energy cashback will take about a week from March 17th, and the fee reflection period will be reflected in the electricity bill for March.

Q. Is it possible to apply for energy cashback on behalf of a parent who does not live at the same address?
