(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Shin Jae-woo = The average monthly wage of home care workers working in Seoul is only 1.1 million won, and most care workers want to implement the 8-hour salary system to ensure stable wages.
According to the Seoul Nursing Care Workers Association on the 17th, as a result of conducting a ‘survey to establish a stable wage system’ for home care caregivers in the Seoul area from last August to recently, the average monthly wage of 244 respondents was 1.1 million won. This is 65% of this year’s median income per person of 1.67 million won.
The average age of respondents was 59 years old, and 59% were responsible for their family’s livelihood.
The highest number of visits per week to recipients’ homes was 5 days a week at 61%. 27% responded that they worked 6 days a week, and 1 in 4 care workers could not rest even on Saturdays.
Regarding desired working hours, 61% of respondents wanted to work 8 hours a day full-time, and 23% wanted to work 6 hours a day.
Long-term care insurance for the elderly is a social insurance system that supports physical activities or housework for the elderly who have difficulty in daily life due to old age or geriatric diseases.
When the system was introduced in 2008, the home care service time was 4 hours per time, and there were cases where people visited two homes a day and worked up to 8 hours. However, since 2017, due to the minimum wage increase, the service time per service has been shortened to 3 hours and additional work has become difficult.
The Seoul Nursing Care Workers Association emphasized, “As the elderly population is rapidly increasing, in order to ensure the provision of high-quality nursing services, we must create good jobs with wages and working conditions that are at least at the social average level and a sense of pride and satisfaction.”
The association argued, “What must immediately take precedence in order to improve jobs for home care workers is hourly work,” and added, “If the current hourly rate is not changed to a monthly salary system for 8 hours a day, it will be difficult to attract the younger generation.”
